This book is a must-read for anyone wanting to exercise techniques to stretch their minds and imagine previously unimaginable futures. The future scenarios presented, along with the well-researched notes, have ‘blown’ my mind on multiple occasions.
Critically, I believe the author’s views, which lean towards a liberal or as a Democrat stance from the US, influence the narrative. For example, the issue of ‘Economic Inequality’—which I would more accurately label as ‘Systemic Poverty’—is discussed. The focus should not be on the significant gap between the highest and lowest income percentiles but on the societal implications poverty brings. Our goal should be to eradicate poverty from the world.
That said, the content and futures thinking techniques are incredibly useful and impactful for those willing to engage with them. Coupled with a critical mind, this book is a ‘must-read.’ It prepares us to be more resilient and agile towards the future, adopting an "Urgent Optimism" mentality, which characterized by mental flexibility, agency to influence the future, and grounded positivism.
